The working group, which decides how to organize the transportation of passengers by rail to the airport, is formed in Nizhny Novgorod.
The members of this group are the experts of the Nizhniy Novgorod Region’s administration, JSC "RZD - Gorky Railway" and JSC "Nizhniy Novgorod International Airport - Strigino".
The airport is located in Nizhny Novgorod, 25 km from the city centre and 20 km from the Moscow railway station. However, the way from the city to the airport often takes much more than an hour because of traffic jams. Meanwhile, a kilometre from the airport there is a railway line in the direction to Arzamas, and even closer there are the railways of non-common use. This infrastructure allows to build a railway station near the airport for the minimal cost, which would take trains from the Moscow railway station each 20 minutes.
"I think there are excellent technical prerequisites for the development of such intermodal transport," Mr. Valentine Nazaryan, the CEO of "Strigino International Airport", says. "This transport links different kinds of transport, taking into account that our Airport is included in the federal program of development".
"We attach great importance to the project and believe that it can be profitable for "RZD". We discussed the concept of such transport at the meeting with Mr. Valery Shantsev, the Governor of the Nizhniy Novgorod Region," Mr. Sergey Kozyrev, the CEO of the "RZD-Gorky Railway", says. "We plan to build a terminal at the Moscow railway station, where passengers would be checked in and then take the train according to the timetable agreed with flights of the airport. The organization of this intermodal transport is linked to the development of the Nizhny Novgorod Airport "Strigino", where is being reconstructed since 2006. The completion of the reconstruction and the associated sharp rise of the air traffic are planned for 2010. By this time the administration of the region considers it necessary to connect the railway to the transportation of airport passengers".
